GM's compliance costs for fuel economy standards have dropped by $20.4 billion due to changes made by the Trump administration. The new Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards apply to model years through 2031, easing annual efficiency increases. Under the revised rule, GM's fleet-wide average will be about 34.9 mpg by 2031, compared to the previous target of 50.4 mpg. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration projects consumer savings of $138 billion over five years with the new rules. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy sees the new standards as beneficial for consumers, reducing the average new vehicle price.
